The Hive
When Alyson Shepherd's father passed away in May 2020, an unexpected discovery in her garden — a decades-old beehive hidden within a tree — changed everything. Watching the bees at work became a source of peace and healing.
Inspired by the strength of her then 101-year-old grandmother, Norma May Wells, Alyson named her honey business in her honour.

Education
Together with The Urban Bee Education, we deliver flexible, hands-on bee education across Brisbane, Logan City, Redlands, Gold Coast, Scenic Rim and Sunshine Coast — from STEM-focused school incursions and the Bees in Schools program to school holiday workshops and sessions for OSHC and kindy kids.
Our team is well-versed in education, learning support and disability inclusion, so every workshop and incursion is flexible and tailored to the diverse needs of all participants.

The Pollinator Warriors Program was created so every child — no matter how they learn — can connect with bees, nature and each other. Through the power of stingless bees, we support neurodivergent students with slow, sensory-aware sessions where children engage in their own way, without pressure or expectation.
Alyson knows basic Auslan to help communicate with non-verbal children, and can provide a social story for autistic children before a visit, so everyone arrives feeling safe, prepared and confident.

The Girls in Pink
In collaboration with The Urban Bee — collectively known as The Girls in Pink — Norma-May Honey cares for over 50 urban-specific honey hives across different apiary locations, protecting and championing our valuable pollinators.

Queensland Landcare Awards · Queensland Water & Land Carers
Alyson Shepherd was Highly Commended in the Women in Landcare Award at the 2026 Queensland Landcare Awards. The citation recognises Norma-May Honey's sustainability-focused beekeeping, pollinator protection and inclusive environmental education — including the Pollinator Warriors Program and pioneering chemical-free varroa mite control using heat treatment.
AgriFutures Australia
Alyson was one of four Queensland state finalists in the 2026 AgriFutures Rural Women's Award — Australia's leading award for women in rural and regional industries — recognising the Pollinator Warriors Program's inclusive education impact. The state award was won by Angie Nisbet, announced at Customs House, Brisbane, on 19 March 2026.
